Is the job right for you?

Now we’re in February, you may be well on your way with your job search and even have interviews lined up. However, if you have a few opportunities in the pipeline, you may be wondering which job is the best fit for you.

Recently a survey was conducted, that highlighted a reason many people regret accepting their new job role, is due to the company or position itself, being different to what they initially thought it would be. However, you can try an avoid this happening to you, by taking time to research the role, the company & it’s values etc. to help decide whether it will be the right job for you and how it compares to future goal you may have – so you don’t end up regretting it.

Employers will always evaluate you before hiring you, so why shouldn’t you evaluate them?

XCL Group can help you with this and below we have outlined some of the best ways to decide if a job is right for you.

Validate The Job Description

You could do some research on the company’s website, looking at the profiles of the people who already work there, using resources such as LinkedIn to look at their work history/background, which in turn will help you compare your skill level to see if the role fits as it reads. In other words, you may see that someone already in a similar role to the one you’re applying, is far more qualified and so you might need to up skill your CV or vice versa, you could end up realising the role seems a more entry level position that what you’re qualified for.

Make sure you confirm any queries you have during the interview process.

Pay Attention To The Work Culture

Work environment is very important & every business is defined by one through certain habits and behaviors on a day to day basis and it’s important that it feels comfortable to you.

One thing to particularly look for, is what the communication is like between you and the company from the word go. In between emails/phone calls, think about how you feel about how the process is going and how the exchanges have been, e.g. does it feel genuine, do they seem interested to learn more about you, have they made you feel comfortable enough to ask questions throughout the process. If you’re attending interviews with individuals within the company, do you feel like you get on well and have a good connection, would you feel confident working alongside that person or having them manage your targets and progress.

Ensure The Job Meets Your Career Goals

When making the decision to accept a job offer or decline one, you should always keep your core values, future job goals and own interests at the forefront of your mind and make sure during the interview process, you share this information – as this is a good way to see if the company can accommodate your expectations.

An example of why this is important, is that if your motivations within a job role is a promotion, you can ask how others have progressed within the company, or alternatively ask what the company would expect from the role in 2- 3 years’ time, which will give you an idea of whether this fits with your future goals.

During an interview there will be assumptions from both sides, however unless these are discussed, they may then become an issue when starting the job.

This may seem like an in depth way to go about finding the right job for you, however the more you’re invested in the process, the more confident you’ll feel about making the decision to accept a role and feel it is right for you.
