Common Customer Service Job Interview Questions

Thematic banner laptop on desk featured on xcl website

There are few jobs that are quite as varied as customer service staff - meaning that when it comes time to apply for a new job and attend an interview, it can be difficult to know what to expect.

But whatever sector you operate in, the responsibilities and requirements of customer support personnel will be largely the same. You will be serving customers and clients by providing product and service information, dealing with queries and helping to resolve problems.

Common interview questions

Customer service interviews may consist of being asked a variety of different question types. You can expect to be asked typical, non-job specific questions such as about your employment history, skills and qualifications and your career goals. You can see our advice for answering these types of questions here.

You are also likely to be asked questions that relate to your personality and work style, and may include behavioural questions that require you to explain how you dealt with past experiences at work.

Similar to behavioural questions in that you will be asked about various work scenarios, you may also be asked situational questions. However, these will be more focused on how you would handle a future or hypothetical situation related to the job you are applying for.

Examples of interview questions

  1. What does customer service mean to you?

  2. What is good customer service?

  3. Why do you want to work in a customer service role?

  4. When was the last time you experienced great customer experience - what made it so great?

  5. Tell me about a time you resolved a particularly difficult issue?

  6. Tell me about a time you were unable to resolve a customer’s problem - how did you handle the situation?

  7. How would you handle an angry customer?

  8. What would you do if a customer asks you a question you don’t know the answer to?

Giving a great job interview is a skill - and one that will only improve as you gain more practice and confidence in your ability. But having an idea of what to expect, and carefully planning your answers to some commonly asked questions will put you at an advantage.
