Changing Career

Identify your transferable skills

The new year may have given you the push you needed to make a new start in your career and with that in mind XCL Group can help you in the process.

Identifying your transferable skills can be important when applying for new roles in a different sector, to what you may have previously worked in. It’s often misunderstood that just being skilled in one job role can be a waste when wanting to change career paths, however this is not the case as whatever you have trained in, there will be some valuable skills that can be transferred from one job to another.

So instead of compiling a CV filled with basic skills (do still list these if it is part of the job description you’re applying for) you should also home in on the strong transferable skills that highlight your abilities in the most effective way.

See below for some examples of transferable skills

Project management

To be successful in project management, it requires detailed planning, control, and execution of work, that often involves multiple people and aims to achieve a certain set of objectives.

Whether you’re still wanting to stick with a project management-specific role, or move into one, this is valuable experience that can be applied to any job function.

Project management demonstrates your ability to manage multiple tasks, effectively manage your time, prioritise tasks and work collaboratively with other employees.

Research and analysis

Research is a valuable skill that can be applied to jobs in any sector and having research experience shows that you are able to determine the best approach to answering questions, finding relevant information and your ability to work out how to analyse and interpret that information.

Employee management or team leadership

If you’ve ever managed other members of staff, or if you were responsible for the management of external freelancers, include this in your CV. Having experience in a Management role shows you have the ability to motivate other members of a team, effective at problem solve, while also delegating the work load.

Just like with any skill or experience you include in your CV, make sure you also include specific details of your responsibilities in managing others, i.e. how many people you managed and what their roles were etc.

Changing careers can be a daunting experience - but when you’re equipped with a strong set of transferable skills and understand how they apply to the job you’re applying for, it might not be as difficult as you expect.

XCL are always dedicated to helping candidates find their ideal job. We’ll get you know you, your work background, and your career goals to identify the roles and employers that fit best with you.
